Linda Brothwell: Conversations in Making
Stonehenge Visitor Centre
Commissioned by Ginkgo Projects for Bloor Homes in partnership with English Heritage
Linda Brothwell’s recent exhibition (the first contemporary art exhibition at Stonehenge) provided an intriguing new way to think about the landscape surrounding Amesbury and Stonehenge and the archaeological objects found here. Tools, vessels, making and using our hands; these are the threads that link people and place through time. These are Conversations in Making.
The creation of forty vessels has been inspired by speaking to ten makers who live and work in the local community in and around Amesbury: key cutter, hairdresser, tattooist and leather worker, among others. She has also been inspired by prehistoric tools and pottery vessels in both Wiltshire Museum and the Salisbury Museum.
About the artist:
Linda Brothwell, whose previous project The Tool Appreciation Society was dedicated to makers and their tools – has work in the V&A Museum and the Royal College collections. She has exhibited in the UK and internationally for the British Council, The Design Museum, Palais de Tokyo, the Korean National University of Cultural Heritage, The Royal Society for Arts and COLLECT. Brothwell is pioneering an understanding of British craft skills and tools by illustrating the importance of their value to economic, social and cultural development.
