Caerphilly Town 2035 Cultural Programming

The Caerphilly Town 2035 Placemaking Plan is a bold and ambitious vision for the future of the town centre that will enhance and regenerate the area between now and 2035.

Ginkgo Projects is working closely with Stride Treglown to integrate cultural programming into the development of a master plan and key town centre regeneration projects. The project is being delivered by multiple stakeholders with the community at its heart.

A Cultural Strategy for Caerphilly 2035

A cultural strategy delivery plan is in development for Caerphilly’s 2035 Placemaking Plan

In 2023, a high-level strategic approach was created to focus on animating the public realm, including:

  • Enhancing connectivity and identity

  • Developing event-based activity, allowing ideas to be tested, and capacity built, to welcome audiences

  • Supporting the scoping and development of a new anchor Cultural Centre and associated activity at Caerphilly Workmen’s Hall.

A new community interest company, Cynefin Caerffili, has been established to explore the potential to redevelop the Caerphilly Workmen’s Hall, into a vibrant, independent and sustainable regional cultural hub at the heart of Caerphilly.

The Caerphilly Cultural Centre will be a place where art, entertainment, culture and creative enterprise meet, forming a revitalised, community-driven cultural destination for the town.

Cynefin Caerffili has also just established a new meanwhile space, Y Banc, on Cardiff Road. This newly transformed multi-purpose space provides a hub for local businesses, creative programmes, and community-driven initiatives.

Culture Hive

We have formed a small ‘Culture Hive’ to develop and test ideas for an artist or cultural residency programme that can be embedded within the Caerphilly Placemaking Plan.

A town-wide artist residency programme will play an integral role in the activation of public realm and supporting key regeneration projects within the town centre. We aim to develop a cultural programme centred around collaborative research, cultural events, and permanent projects/installations.  This will inspire and reveal existing new cultural narratives as the town develops over the coming years.

Caerphilly’s bid for UK Town of Culture

Caerphilly is bidding to become the UK’s first-ever Town of Culture, and we are inviting Caerphilly residents and businesses to help shape a vision for the town’s future.

As part of a new national competition launched this year, one visionary town will be selected as UK Town of Culture for 2028 and receive £3 million to start a year-long programme of cultural celebrations.

Cynefin Caerffili is holding a series of events under the initiative “Calon Caerffili" for the people of Caerphilly to take part in the creation of the cultural programme, which will be submitted in the competition bid on 31 March 2026.
