Location: Caerphilly | Caerffilli
Artist Sebastien Boyesen is creating a detailed relief map of Caerffili town, filled with local history, hidden references and legendary Caerffili characters. The map brings together centuries of stories — from castle battles and Welsh folklore to Tommy Cooper and the Sex Pistols — in one sculptural procession through the town.
The Caerffili Town Relief Map is a key commission as part of the Caerphilly Town 2035 Placemaking Plan, a bold and ambitious vision for the future of the town centre that will enhance and regenerate the area between now and 2035.
Ginkgo Projects is working closely with Stride Treglown to integrate cultural programming into the development of a master plan and key town centre regeneration projects. The project is being delivered by multiple stakeholders with the community at its heart.
Behind the Scenes: The making of the Caerffili Town Relief Map
A wax replica has now been taken from the original clay sculpture, and a Corten steel plinth for the final artwork has been shaped.
A behind-the-scenes look at the next stage of the Caerffili Town Relief Map. Artist Sebastien Boyesen works with 3D modelling, printing and mould-making, ahead of bronze casting. Look closely and you might spot Tommy Cooper’s fez, a Roman centurion, sporting figures linked to the town… and much more.
The map is designed to be explored slowly, with hidden references and stories built into every inch.
In the next stage of production, the relief map and miniature figures are coated in a ceramic shell to create moulds for bronze casting. Using the traditional “lost wax” process, the wax inside is melted away before molten bronze is poured into the moulds. The finished artwork will become a permanent feature in the town centre, celebrating the stories, people and myths that have shaped Caerffili over centuries.
