TIME AND SPACE

Client: Multiplex Construction Europe Ltd. and NHS Lothian
Funded by: NHS Lothian Charity’s Tonic Arts Programme
Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity

The Residencies and Fellowships within the Beyond Walls Programme of Art and Therapeutic Design at the new hospital, created opportunities to build relationships between the hospital and the communities which it serves. This was very much part of our ‘place-based’ approach to creating connections and audiences between the new hospital and the cultures of the city.

Two Residencies were focused on specific communities within the city, and three Fellowships on research and working practices in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences (DCN). The Fellowships, curated by Mark Daniels, Director of New Media Scotland, worked with the City Arts Centre.

Artist Research Fellowships

Curated by Mark Daniels as part of the Ginkgo team, the Creative Research Artist Fellowships were undertaken by Susana Cámara Leret, Alex Menzies and Gavin Inglis. The aim was to promote and highlight the research interests and working practices found in DCN. The Fellowships sought to build relationships between artists, staff and external research partners to demonstrate best practice and contribute to dialogues about the benefits of creative practice in clinical environments. There were also three Mentoring Residencies with Sven Werner, Stacey Hunter and Jack King-Spooner.

A space was set up in the City Arts Centre to support the Fellowships and subsequent Mentoring Residencies, as well as having a space to connect with other projects in the Art and Therapeutic Design programme.

“The audience at the City Arts Centre is quite interesting because it’s a mix of local and international. We had an exhibition there called The Re(a)d Bed. We had done a European-wide call for the three Fellowships, but we also had three month-long Mentoring Residencies where I brought in Sven Werner, Stacey Hunter and Jack King-Spooner. I thought they would benefit from having some time and resources to make something happen. It provided us with some very focused, definitive outcomes for the exhibition.” - Mark Daniels
