This sculptural form was created by Tom Littlewood working from concept designs by land artist Jim Buchanan in the stable block at Callender House, Falkirk.
The work is based on the Fibonacci Spiral. The spiral is generated using the rules of the classical system often found in art and architecture called the Golden section. The system is created from the application of a rule of proportion based upon a number series 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13 to create a proportion of 1:1.618.
The spiral is found in nature in the way that shells, pine cones and sunflower seed heads are formed and is often thought to be a ‘perfect’ form.
At the centre of the work lies a cast glass spiral designed by Keiko Mukaide. The steel uprights were created by artist blacksmith Adam Booth.
