St Johns Centre, Liverpool

The Liverpool city region is undergoing a transformation, becoming European Capital of Culture 2008 and redefining its role as a regional retail centre. Liverpool city centre is a driving force in this renaissance and St Johns Shopping Precinct has been recognised by Land Securities as a valuable resource and an integral part of the Liverpool city retail core.

The successful regeneration of the shopping centre depends on effectively addressing existing issues of permeability and integration, while bringing the quality of the public realm in this area into line with recent improvements made to adjacent neighbourhoods.

Land Securities have asked Ginkgo to involve artists with the key aim of promoting the legibility and experience of visiting St John’s. Carpenter Lowings and AllofUs have been asked to produce concept designs for work that will promote a sense of arrival at the various entrances to the St John’s Centre and facilitate way finding within. The chosen concept designs will be included within the planning application, embedding the public art into the development at this early stage.

This scheme is the first of a number of artist commissions to take place within the St Johns redevelopment.
