DG1 Leisure Centre

1. The Art in Sport film will bring art and sport together by producing a series of intimate visual portraits of local and national sportsmen and women from various sporting disciplines. Including a 73-year-old World Champion powerlifter, a 16-year-old Scottish Women’s Champion and record holding steeplechaser and famious Scottish cyclist.Through these films the viewer will discover precisely what makes Scotland's most intriguing athletes tick. Providing a thrilling snapshot of their personal processes and the gruelling pursuits they engage in, all in the name of sport.

2. The DG1 Light project The project will involve using light, colour and projection to enliven the interior and exterior of the DG1 building. Helping to celebrate and communicate what is going on inside the building from the outside. Malcolm’s light art installation will enliven the exterior surfaces of the building and relate the activity happening within the building to the visual effect on the outside. Sensors placed within the building will control movement and change in the light to reflect the level of activity inside the building. Quiet times in the building will create calm and subtle changes in the light, busy periods will create more rapid changes and motion in the light art installation.

3. Sculptural Space project an important DG1 site has been redesigned by artist, Walter Jack, working in collaboration with landscape architect, Nic Coombey of Solway Heritage. The site is also an important orientation point to and from the town centre. The aims is to create an imaginative off road public space for people using the leisure centre facilities, somewhere for children to “let off steam”, and somewhere for people to eat their lunch and watch the world go by. Jack’s concept idea is to draw some of the energy and excitement within DG1 into a new public space: and use it to pull people back into the building. ‘Sprintime in Dumfries’ is a giant spring. It emanates from the building – and frames a view towards the building. It focuses and draws people to and from the DG1 building. The form and space is also an arbor or pergola and is well suited to the linear space.
