River Echoes is a collective artist-led investigation into Bristol's waterways through a series of participatory Deep Listening Walks and a live sound, music and film event on and under the waters of Bristol, commissioned by Ginkgo Projects.

Throughout September 2021, explore the sounds of Bristol from an underwater perspective on a Deep Listening Walk with award-winning, Bristol-based artist Kathy Hinde who will be joined by a variety of guests sharing unique insights into Bristol’s rivers and waterways.

In October, become immersed in resonant soundscapes and glistening traces at a site-specific music, sound and film performance inspired by the hidden river Frome, taking place around the Bathurst Basin.

Water forms the arteries of the planet. We are 60% water. Water is a key ingredient for life, and a key catalyst for the origin of biological life on earth. What could be a deeper and more direct connection between the planet, other species and each other?

DEEP LISTENING WALKS

Join artist Kathy Hinde on a series of walks that explore Bristol’s waterways by listening from an underwater perspective using hydrophones.  Discover Bristol’s hidden river, the Frome, by tuning in to the minuscule sounds emitted by small aquatic organisms enveloped by the gentle flow of water.  Contemplate Bristol’s unique tidal range (the second largest in the world) from an edge point of the city, demarcated by a shifting watery passageway carving a space between the urban and the rural, the Avon Gorge.

For each walk, Kathy will be joined by a guest who will share their specialist knowledge of Bristol’s waterways, including a freshwater ecologist, a marine scientist, and a member of the harbour team.

River Echoes Deep Listening Walks are transmitted onto wireless headphones offering an enhanced listening experience of a live mix between the usually inaudible underwater soundscape and amplified sounds of the surroundings interspersed with a conversation between the walking guides.

The walks feature as part of global festival Soundwalk September and Pervasive Media Studio's Climate Assemblages Season.

RIVER ECHOES LIVE
Sunday 17th October
Location: Bathurst Basin, Bristol

A site-specific music, sound and film performance inspired by the hidden river Frome, taking place around the Bathurst Basin.  Become immersed in resonant soundscapes and glistening traces from Bristol’s under-explored underwater worlds.

From midday, intriguing sounds will emerge from strangely-shaped metallic horns surrounding the Bathurst Basin, revealing the usually inaudible underwater sound world of Bristol.

Later in the afternoon, this subaquatic soundscape is augmented into a live site specific performance inspired by listening to the underground resonant spaces of the river Frome, flowing under the city. The hidden soundscape of the Frome is translated into a multi-layered, spatialised composition for brass, featuring Bristol musicians Pete Judge and Liz Purnell joined by Sam Underwood (ORE) and Sophie Cooper and an all-comers ensemble, together,  sounding Bristol’s river Frome as it is reunited with the tidal river Avon.

At sunset, when the tide is at its highest point of the day, lights will flicker onto the water of the Avon cut, close to the point where the Frome re-joins the tidal waters of the Avon from its underground passageway through the city.  As the tide goes out, a film projection will gradually be revealed onto the mud banks. This 16mm film is created from particles, sediment and plant matter gathered from the whole length of the river Frome and exposed onto celluloid film, developed using plants and water from the river.

12-4pm - Sound Installation
4-5pm - Immersive Sound Performance
7.30-midnight - Film Projection
( film revealed onto mud banks from approx. 9pm )

This is a free event for the citizens of, and visitors to Bristol. Booking is not required, just turn up and submerge yourself in the sounds of the underwater world.
